Thalapathy’ Vijay launches political party: A history of film stars’ entry into Tamil Nadu politics. Actor "Thalapathy" Vijay has now joined the lengthy list of Tamil actors who have entered politics with the founding of his political organisation, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam, earlier this week. He announced in a letter that the party would run for the Tamil Nadu State Assembly in 2026.

"Politics is not just another profession; to me, it is a sacred service to the people," he declared. After finishing the film I've already committed to, I want to fully commit to politics as a public service, so long as it doesn't interfere with party activity. I see this as my way of showing my appreciation and obligation to the Tamil Nadu people.

Not only is Vijay not the first Tamil superstar to enter politics, but he also most likely won't be the last. The state has had five chief Ministers with ties to the film industry. We examine the multi-decade tradition.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) was the party of Annadurai, the first chief minister of Tamil Nadu to come from a Dravidian background. Additionally, he was the first to use the easily available and "mass" medium of film to further the party's anti-religion and anti-caste "Self-respect Movement." He criticised Brahminism in his screenplays for films like Nallathambi (1948) and Vellaikaari (1949).

The theatre served as the inspiration for Annadurai's cinematic legacy. Robert L. Hardgrave Jr. states in his essay, "Politics and the Film in Tamil Nadu," that Annadurai, a young Dravida Kazhagam officer, wrote several plays as platforms for social reform and non-Brahmin self-respect. Following the DMK's founding, dramas were presented as benefit performances for the party by Annadurai, E V K Sampath, and K R Ramaswamy, who was at the time Tamil Nadu's most well-known actor and movie star.
