IPL 2024 Opening Date Revealed: The Indian Premier League is all set for its 17th season to commence. While the league usually starts in March/April, we did not know the exact opening date of its start in 2024. Now, league chairman Arun Dhumal has revealed that IPL 2024 will start on March 22.

Although, the schedule for this year’s IPL has not been announced yet. This is because the exact dates for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections have not been finalized. Although we do know that the elections will be happening in April/May, alongside IPL.

IPL 2024 Opening Date Revealed: Will IPL 2024 Happen in India?

IPL has had an interesting history in the years of the Indian General Elections. The 2nd season of IPL in 2009 took place around the same time as the Lok Sabha elections. To not cause any clash with the ability of its viewers to vote, India’s premier franchise tournament made its way to South Africa for only its 2nd season.

A similar case happened in 2014 when the initial stages of the IPL clashed with the Lok Sabha elections. That year, the first five matches of each team were played in the UAE. After the voting season ended, the league returned to India.

In his announcement, Arun Dhumal announced that only the schedule for the first 15 days of the tournament will be announced. The rest of the schedule will be revealed once the dates for the General Elections are announced. He also stated that the entire tournament will be played in India.

“We are looking at a March 22 start for the tournament. We are working closely with the government agencies and we will first release the initial schedule. The entire tournament will be held in India. The Lok Sabha polls are anticipated to have their dates announced early next month,” Dhumal told PTI.

It is also being reported that the final of IPL 2024 will take place on May 26, mere days before the start of the 2024 T20 World Cup, with its first match between the USA and Canada being played on June 1.

Seeing the tradition that the tournament has followed for years, the first match on March 22 will be a repeat of last year’s final, where defending champion Chennai Super Kings will take on the Gujarat Titans.
